As with many historic homes, this stately farmhouse had seen several piecemeal additions and renovations throughout its history. In order to bring its efficiency into the 21st century, we cleared the canvas to evaluate the home’s functionality in terms of modern living. To create a more natural flow, a defined front entry was added with additional access points dictated by the client’s lifestyle. A beautiful covered deck extended the family’s living space while also giving the home a balanced façade. By relocating the kitchen and dining room as well as opening up the stairway, the main floor gained an open yet connected feel. Hardworking spaces like a mudroom with storage and a kitchen pantry were added, and poorly used space on the second story was reworked to allow for a master suite and a second floor laundry. Smart storage and larger closets added value to the plan, and formerly unfinished attic space was utilized to create additional living space that is flexible and welcoming.
