Tri-Level Transformation

interior & exterior renovation

Multi-level homes present unique challenges for renovation. The goal for this project was to deliver a smartly flowing layout, with additional bedrooms, in a way that improved the home's curb appeal. By designing a second story addition to span all the way across the existing structure, we effectively transformed the home's style from a dated tri-level to a modern colonial. Inside, an altered layout of the kitchen and living rooms now gives the clients better gathering places while a pantry and several new storage areas improve function. Since all of the bedrooms were moved to the second story, an upper level laundry room makes great sense. A two-story front foyer brings a welcoming, connected feeling to the old and new spaces, and a spacious master suite situated over the garage creates a private retreat. Finally, we brought balance and interest to the façade with a large covered porch and the strategic use of mixed materials. Natural stone placed below the cantilever on the existing structure makes an otherwise odd-looking space seem intentional, and the addition of brick skirting ties everything together. The final touch was a small pergola over the garage door to elevate the design and artfully balance the two ends of the home.
